The Length Limit That Decides Where You Can Sleep

Most people choose the rental first and the campground second. The campground has an opinion about that.
Every reservable site on recreation.gov has a maximum length. It is not a guideline: it is the length of the pad, between the trees and the boulders and the picnic table, and a rig that does not fit is a rig parked on the road. So before choosing between a 21 ft van and a 30 ft Class C, it is worth knowing how many sites each one actually opens up.
We read the listing of every RV site at the six national park campgrounds on our 7-day Utah itinerary — Zion, Arches, Capitol Reef and Bryce Canyon — on 3 October 2026. That is 385 sites that allow an RV. Group, walk-in and tent-only sites are left out.
A 25 ft rig fits 338 of them. A 35 ft rig fits 249. And at Bryce Canyon’s Sunset Campground, a 30 ft rig fits three.

Every five feet, about 45 sites

| Campground | Park | RV sites | 25 ft rig | 30 ft rig | 35 ft rig |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Watchman | Zion | 92 | 92 | 92 | 92 |
| South | Zion | 104 | 101 | 93 | 85 |
| Devils Garden | Arches | 34 | 32 | 27 | 20 |
| Fruita | Capitol Reef | 58 | 58 | 46 | 29 |
| North | Bryce Canyon | 51 | 41 | 33 | 23 |
| Sunset | Bryce Canyon | 46 | 14 | 3 | 0 |
| All six | 385 | 338 (88%) | 294 (76%) | 249 (65%) |
Each step of five feet takes about 45 sites off the table, and the losses are not spread evenly. Zion barely notices: every RV site at Watchman is at least 37 ft, and South still has 85 sites for a 35-footer. Bryce is where the length decides the trip.
The 35 ft column is worth a second look if Zion is on your route. The Zion-Mount Carmel Highway caps single vehicles at 35 ft 9 in, so a rig near that length is already the longest the park lets through — and it is also a rig that is turned away by a third of the sites in these six campgrounds.

Bryce Canyon: where the length decides the trip

Bryce has two campgrounds, and they are very different places for an RV.
- Sunset puts all its RV sites in Loop A — Loops B and C are for tents and small vans. Of its 46 RV sites, 24 take a 21 ft van, 14 take a 25 ft rig, 3 take 30 ft, and none take 35 ft.
- North has RV sites in Loops A and B. Loop A is the one to aim for: 23 of its 30 sites take 30 ft. In Loop B, 10 of 21 do.
So a 30 ft Class C at Bryce is a North Loop A booking, more or less by definition. That matters twice, because the two Bryce loops that allow generators are North’s A and B and Sunset’s A — the generator rules and the length limits point you to the same place.
And it matters for the day as well as the night. During shuttle season, vehicles 23 ft and longer cannot park at the Bryce Amphitheater viewpoints. A short rig gets you a site at Sunset and a parking space at Sunset Point.
Read both numbers on the listing

There is a catch in the data itself. A recreation.gov site listing gives the length in two places: the permitted equipment (“RV, up to 30 ft”) and the site details (“Max Vehicle Length: 20”). Usually they agree. At Bryce, they often do not.
- At Sunset, 22 of 46 RV sites list two different lengths — most of them 30 ft in the equipment list and 20 ft in the details.
- At North, 29 of 51 do, in both directions.
- At the other four campgrounds, two sites in total.
Every number in this article uses the shorter of the two. Trust the longer one instead and a 25 ft rig fits 35 Sunset sites, not 14. We do not know which is right, and recreation.gov does not say. What we do know is which mistake costs more: arriving at 7 p.m. with a rig that does not fit, at a campground that is full.
If the site you want shows two numbers, either book one where both clear your rig, or call the park and ask before you pay.
The number in the model name is not the length

Rental listings tend to describe a rig by its model, and model names have numbers in them. The numbers are not lengths.
The Winnebago Minnie Winnie 22M, one of the most common Class C rentals and one of the two rigs in our water system guide, is 24 ft 5 in long in Winnebago’s 2026 specification. The other, the Travato 59G van, is 21 ft.

Site lengths are whole feet, so round up. The 22M needs a 25 ft site, and at Sunset that is 14 sites of 46. Read as “22”, it would have looked like 22 of them.
| Rig | Length | Sunset | North | Devils Garden | Fruita |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Travato 59G (van) | 21 ft | 24 of 46 | 47 of 51 | 34 of 34 | 58 of 58 |
| Minnie Winnie 22M (Class C) | 24 ft 5 in | 14 of 46 | 41 of 51 | 32 of 34 | 58 of 58 |
The manufacturer’s length is also the shortest the rig will ever be. A bike rack, a rear ladder or a spare tyre on the back all add to it, and the site does not care which part of the rig is hanging over the edge. During your pickup inspection, put a tape on it, bumper to bumper, with everything that rides on the back.
Capitol Reef: the generator loop is the long-site loop

Fruita is the pleasant surprise. Every one of its 58 RV sites takes a 25 ft rig. At 30 ft it is 46, at 35 ft it is 29 — and 17 of those 29 are in Loop C, the only loop where generators are allowed. Loops A and B together have 12.
So a long rig at Fruita lands in Loop C almost by default, and that is the loop you would want anyway if you are counting on the generator.
Zion and Arches

Zion is the easy one. The 92 RV sites at Watchman are the electric sites, and the shortest of them is 37 ft. South, next door, has 85 sites for a 35 ft rig. At Zion, length is not your problem — getting the reservation is, and the width limit on the road east is.
Arches has one campground, Devils Garden, and only 34 of its sites allow an RV. A 25 ft rig fits 32 of them, a 30 ft rig 27, a 35 ft rig 20. That would be plenty anywhere else. At a campground that is full every night from March to October, every site you are too long for is a site you were competing for.

Choosing the rig and the site, in order

- Get the real length of the rig. Not the model number: the exterior length from the manufacturer’s spec, plus anything on the back. Round up to the next foot.
- Pick the campground with that number in hand. If Bryce is on the route and the rig is over 25 ft, plan on North, not Sunset.
- Pick the loop. Some loops do not take RVs at all, and the loops that allow generators are not always where the long sites are.
- Read both lengths on the site listing, and plan on the shorter.
- Leave yourself a foot. A back-in site with a picnic table at the end is not the place to find out that “30 ft” was measured generously.
If you are still choosing the rental, this is the order to do it in: look at the sites you want first, then filter rentals by length. On Outdoorsy, ask the owner for the bumper-to-bumper length before you book, and write it on the trip sheet next to the width and height you need for Zion.
And if the park campgrounds are full or too short for your rig, the commercial RV parks outside them are the fallback. A marketplace like Campspot lists many of them around Springdale, Moab and Bryce Canyon City. Check the length of the specific site you are booking, the same way you would on recreation.gov.

RV length check, before you book — roadsideatlas.com
Fill the rig section once. Fill a campsite row for each night of the trip, from the recreation.gov site listing.
The rig
- Model and year
- Exterior length from the manufacturer's spec (not the model number)
- Plus bike rack, ladder, spare tyre on the back
- Total length, rounded up to the next foot
- Width with mirrors (Zion highway limit: 7 ft 10 in)
- Height with the air conditioner (Zion limit: 11 ft 4 in)
Each campsite
- Campground, loop and site number
- Loop takes RVs? Allows generators?
- Equipment list: RV up to ___ ft
- Site details: max vehicle length ___ ft
- Shorter of the two, minus one foot, still clears the rig?
- Back-in or pull-through
During the day
- Parking limits at viewpoints (Bryce Amphitheater: under 23 ft in shuttle season)
- Shuttle or tow vehicle needed?
If you take one thing away: pick the campground before you pick the rig, and measure the rig before you book the site. Under 25 ft, nearly every park site in Utah is open to you. At 30 ft, Bryce Canyon has a handful. And the length on the listing is only as good as the shorter of its two numbers.
